Use Content Formatting to Show Relevancy

The best way to waste your time creating content, is to leave it unformatted. So let me introduce you to a few of my formatting friends.

  • Bold
  • Italics
  • Unordered Lists (like this list)
  • Ordered Lists (when things need an order to them)
  • Headers (h1, h2, h3, h4)

When a user sees any more than 2 paragraphs in a row, they have to make a subconscious decision. “Is it worth it?” And with most of us having short attention spans, most people end up thinking “nope!” and don’t read any of the content…. Because it looks boring and can’t be scanned very easily.

4 easy ways to make content more readable?

  1. Break up the content.
Sometimes, short paragraphs work better because they follow our train of thoughts better.
  2. Use lists when appropriate.
You don’t need a paragraph that discusses the 5 tenets of fitness – you need a list.
  3. Use bold and italics to emphasize.
Bold content is generally something you want to be read, and italics can be used for asides.
  4. Use Headers to give each section below relevancy.
The headers help break up your content into digestible sections, and gives people an easy way to scan to find the parts they find most important to them.
